Car enthusiasts eagerly await March 1st and September 1st each year. These dates signal the exciting unveiling of new car models and the debut of the year’s new number plates.
Have you ever wondered how often car number plates change or why they do so? If so, we've got the answers for you.
In this article, we will learn more about 2023's new number plates and provide a sneak peek into some of the top electric vehicles available for lease at LetsTalk Leasing, all of which proudly sport these brand-new number plates.
When do number plates change?
Did you know you can tell the year a car was manufactured just by looking at its number plate? The third and fourth characters on the plate signify the year the car was manufactured. These characters change twice a year and follow a specific format.
The date signifier on the number plate of cars released in the first half of the year, from March 1st, corresponds to the last two digits of the year of manufacture. Therefore, this year, the date signifier for vehicles manufactured and registered between March 1st and September 1st will be '23'.
However, cars rolled out during the year's second half, from September 1st, have a number in the 70s in the date signifier position on their number plate. This number is calculated by adding 50 to the year of manufacture. So, for 2023, vehicles manufactured and registered from September 1st onwards will have '73' as the date signifier on their number plates.
When does 23 plate come out?
Armed with the information above, it's easy to work out when to expect this year's number plates to be released.
The number 23 plate has already been released; it was released on March 1st 2023. It will remain the date signifier for all new cars registered within the six months between March 1st 2023, and September 1st 2023.
However, this will change on September 1st 2023, when the 73 number plate appears. The 73 plates will then take over from the 23 as the newest date signifier for all cars registered between September 2023 and February 2024.
Why do number plates change?
Car number plates are more than just a random series of letters and numbers. If you know what you're looking at, car number plates can be used to find out information about the vehicle, including the year it was manufactured and where it was first registered.
The third and fourth numbers on the number plates hold key information about the vehicle's age. But why do these change twice a year?
The primary purpose is to provide a simple and efficient method for both potential buyers and authorities to ascertain the age of a car.
Changing these numbers twice a year also aligns with the automotive industry's typical cycle of releasing new models, which usually happens twice a year, with the first release in March and the second in September.
